Son of John and Ann(?) McReynolds. Emigrated to Pittsburg, PA, 1830. Moved to Detroit, 1833; 1834, appointed Major in the State Militia in Michigan Terr. Became a lawyer, 1840. Served twice in the US Army in Mexico. Went to Grand Rapids after the Civil War to practice law. Held local offices: from 1839040, Detroit alderman; acted as Indian agent, elected prosecuting attorney in 1851 for Wayne Co.; 1852, board of education (its first president) & district attorney. Moved to Muskegon, 1874, elected Muskegon Co. prosecuting attorney; returned to Grand Rapids, 1877. member of the Knights Templar; Detroit Commandery; the Detroit Boat Club; the GAR; president of the Mexican War Veterans' Assoc.
Notable Facts:
Member of the Duquesne Grays, the 1st volunteer military company west of the Alleghanies after the War of 1812. A Brady Guard, Michigan's 1st volunteer militia, first captain of the Montgomery Guards & Lincoln's Cavalry.
His mother was a cousin to Pres. Andrew Jackson.
Resigned his senate seat to serve in the Mexican war, 1847.
Rode on the first train in the US.
