district schools; attended Wyoming Academy; 2 years in Union College in Schenectady; read medicine and graduated at Fairfield, NY, in january 1840.

Biographical Sketch:
Of Scottish ancestry. Son of Robert and Isabella (Watson)McNaughton. His family emigrated to Ireland and then in 1760, to America. He taught school while studying for several years. He practiced briefly in New York state before settling in Jackson, MI, in 1841, where he practiced medicine for about 12 years. He then turned to real estate. He was active in the building of railroads, including the Jackson branch of the Michigan Southern, and the Grand River Valley, of which he was treasurer. He served on the city council and as mayor of Jackson in 1866-1867.

Notable Facts:
He was elected on the free soil ticket as Senator in 1853. Death certificate says burial was to be in the Oaks; Find-a-Grave says McNaughton Cemetery and Political Graveyard says he is interred in Oakdale Cemetery.
