Biographical Sketch:
Son of Martin & Nancy Roof. Studied at Williams Coll. 1828-30; grad. from Hamilton Coll., 1832. Lt.Col. in the NY quartermaster div. Admitted to the bar in NY, 8/1836. Soon after he moved to Lyons, MI, via land & water through undeveloped terr. 1st register of deeds when Ionia Co. 1840, appointed prosecuting attorney; probate judge 1852-6. Retired from law in 1859 for health reasons & began farming. Acted as a recruiter & fund raiser during the Civil War. Died of congestion of the lungs.
Notable Facts:
1st lawyer to become a permanent resident of Ionia Co. Served in the state House & Senate. His wife was a direct descendant of Scottish reformer, John Knox.
