Biographical Sketch:
Son of August Carl Peter and Maria (Miller) Jahnke. During his school days he was a newsboy. On 10/1/1900, he became a messenger with R. G. Dun & Co. He was employed there until 1/1/1907, when he was appointed deputy city clerk. On 1/1/1910, he was selected city clerk of Saginaw. During this term, he also served as secretary of the charter commission. In November, 1912, he was elected city treasurer. The new charter was adopted by the voters of Saginaw early in December, 1913, necessitating a new election. On 12/20/1913, he was elected to the first commission form of government. He was assigned the office of city treasurer and commissioner of finance becoming a member of the board of supervisors. From 1/1/1914 to 4/15/1919, he was chairman of the committee on finance of the board of supervisors. He was re-elected a member of the city commission on 4/15/1915. He was secretary-manager for the Saginaw county fair. he was a member of the Elks, Eagles, Arbeiter Verein, Germania Society, Washington Club, and Odd Fellows. He is also a member of the Iternational Association of Fairs and Expositions.
