He was a union official.
In July 2004 he was appointed Director of the Family Independence Agency's Bureau of Community Action and Economic Opportunity. He served on the Kalamazoo City Commission for ten years.

He graduated from a plumber's apprenticeship in 1961 and worked at plumbing until he graduated from nursing school in the late 1970s.
