Biographical Sketch:
Son of Jeremiah FitzGerald of New York and Sylvia Strickland, the family moved to Michigan around 1835. He worked on the family farm with little education, and taught himself in the evenings. He became a teacher to pay for his attendance at Albion College. He was admitted to the bar, 1858. Prosecuting attorney 1859-62. He moved to Marshall in 1860 and practiced there until 1873. He was prosecuting attorney for Calhoun Co., 1861-65. In 1873, he became a member of the law firm of Champlin, Butterfield & FitzGerald at Grand Rapids. Upon the dissolution of the partnership above mentioned, Mr. FitzGerald was alone in practice until his son-in-law, Edmund D. Barry, became associated with him under the present firm name of FitzGerald & Barry. He was living in Grand Rapids in 1880. He was an unsuccessful candidate for Congress in 1884.
