His parents, Thomas and ??anes (Bilock) Zacharias, immigrated from Poland in 1874. He was a machinist until he was 20, when he became a merchant in the firm of Zacharias Brothers. In 1910, hw was a liquor dealler. He was also a Polish interpreter and general agent for North German Lloyd and American Steamship lines.
