English, Scottish and Irish ancestry. Son of Samuel and Laura (Hungerford) Young. Orphaned at age 12. Worked on farms until he graduated from the Cobleskill, NY high school. Moved to Lansing, MI in 1895. Started a hay and grain business with his brother. Served as city council member and on the Board of Police Commissioners. Memberships: President of the Michigan Hay Association and the national association. President of Lansing Boy Scout council. Chairman of the advisory board for the order of De Molay.
