Son of James & Elizabeth (Shinners) Atkinson. Came to Port Huron, MI in 1854. Law degree from U. of Michigan 1862. Enlisted as 2nd Lt. in the 22nd Michigan Infantry 7/25/1862, later Lt. Col. of the 3rd Regiment; mustered out 2/24/1866. Judge Advocate in Texas under Gen. Custer. Moved to Detroit via Port Huron 1870.
