Biographical Sketch:
Of Irish descent. Son of James & Elizabeth (Shinners [or Skinners]) Atkinson. Came to Port Huron, MI in 1854. Enlisted as 2nd Lt. in the 22nd Michigan Infantry 7/25/1862, later Lt. Col. of the 3rd Regiment; mustered out 2/24/1866. Judge Advocate in Texas under Gen. Custer. Moved to Detroit via Port Huron 1870. He was was appointed collector of customs, 1866-March 1867, while in Port Huron. He was active with the Irish Land League.
