His early education was acquired in the district school,supplemented by a classical course in the State Normal College in Ypsilanti from which he graduated in 1875. He entered the literary department of the University of Michigan in fall of 1875 but due to eye problems he remained there only a short time.

Biographical Sketch:
His parents, Robert and Anna (Muir) Campbell, came from Parish of Dalrymple Ayrshire, Scotland in 1842.

Notable Facts:
His brother was Sen.Andrew Campbell. He was Township Superintendent of Schools and School Inspector for several terms. He was an active member of the State Grange.
