Biographical Sketch:
Moved to Marshall MI with his parents, Rev. Alvan and Fannie A. (Mead) Billings, when he was very young. On October 22, 1861, he enlisted in company G, 1st regiment lancers, for three years, but was mustered out of service with his company on 'March 20, 1862. After completing his studies he went to Sault Ste. Marie and then to Marquette in 1864 where he was engaged in railroad business for 7 years; then went to Utah where he worked in mining for a year and a half. He returned to Marquette in 1873 to superintend iron explorations. Postmaster 15 years and also served as County Clerk, Register of Deeds and Supervisor [5 years]. He was a customs inspector at the time of his death.
