Son of Clark O. & Gertrude (Hartzell) Matthews. Attended Carngie Inst. of Technology, Pittsburg, studying chemical engineering. Practiced law in Fenton after 1929. Involved in insurance, bonds and farm administration. Worked in an automobile factory. He served as justice of the peace, member of township board, and city attorney of Fenton for five terms. He was past commander of James DeWitt Post, No. 38 American Legion; Charter member of the Genesee bar association; director Fenton chamber of commerce; member Sojourners Lodge No. 483, F. & A.M.; past high priest of Royal Arch Masons; captain-general Fenton Commandery, Knights Templar; past patron Fenton Chapter Order of Eastern Star.
