He became a clerk in a store at age 17; at 21 he was promoted to superintendent of the Southfield Furnace Co.. He served as superintendent of the Poor and was twice elected Justice of the Peace. He moved to Michigan in 1867 to oversee the erection of the Lawton Iron Works.
