Background
Education:
Attended the public schools of Bessemer and the Ferguson business college of Ironwood. A great part of his education was gained through practical and dilligent self application to the home study of law, economics and politics.
Biographical Sketch:
Was in the field of steam engineering. He began as a fireman and within a short time was a full fledged steamshovel operator. In 1917, at the age of 24, he enlisted as a private with the 108th engineers, 33rd division, at Chicago, Ill. He served thirty months and took an active part in the battle of Meuse, Argonne, St. Mihiel, Somme, Boise de Forges and others. While in France he was attached with the 17th French army corps and the 3rd corps of the British expeditionary forces. He also served with the army of occupation in Vaden, Germany. He was honorably discharged June 21, 1919. Engaged in the petroleum business and in 1920 was appointed district distributor for Gogebic county, Michigan, and Iron county, Wisconsin, for the Cities Service Oil Company. Served as alderman of Bessemer and was elected mayor, 1922, 1923 and 1924 and again in 1933. In 1932 he was elected to the executive committee of the Gogebic County Democratic Committee as vice-chairman
