Biographical Sketch:
5th child of 12 of Stephen P. & Rachel (Gates) Nelson. Of Scottish descent. Attended Newbury seminary in VT & a Boston commercial college; grad. 1842 or 1953. Came to Muskegon, 1857 to run a sawmill. Later went into business for himself. Held many local offices. Introduced legislation that made treatment of prisoners more humane. Attended a Baptist church but was not a member.
