Biographical Sketch:
He moved with his parents, Ira and Deborah (Fuller), to Ohio when about 7 years old, where he received his education and early culture. He first went to Tuscola County, MI, in the fall of 1854, and bought lands in what is now Columbia. From this time he taught school in Oakland County some 2 years, after which he settled on his lands. At that time, what is now Fair Grove, and one of the banner townships, seemed to be all swamp and unfit for agricultural purposes. Columbia was also very wet and unpromising in appearance. In 1856 or 1857, Mr. Greenfield was elected supervisor of Columbia. He served chairman of the board of supervisors. He was justice of the peace and assessor of Unionville and as treasurer, 1860 and 1862. On August 4, 1864, he raised a company for the 29th Michigan Infantry. He raised Company A, the first in the regiment in a short time. He went as captain until mustering out of the service 9/6/1865.
Notable Facts:
He attended school two terms with James A. Garfield, late president of the United States.
