Common school and academic education education at the State University branches in Tecumseh, White Pigeon and Detroit and received an honorary degree of A. M. from the University.

Biographical Sketch:
Son of Levi and Lois (Johnston) Baxter. His grandfather , Levi Baxter, was a captain in the Revolution; his maternal grandfather was Colonel Witter Johnston in the Revolution. Mr. Baxter cane to Tecumseh with his father in 1831 and stayed there until 1836 then moved to white Pigeon until he moved to Jonesville in 1848. Was a teacher from 1836-1841 until he studied law. Admitted in 1844 and practiced law. Member of Jonesville School Board for 26 years; Supervisor and President of the Board; Appointed to the State Board of Education July 21, 1857 and served almost continuously until he resigned August 6, 1881. President of the State Agricultural Society and its executive board; also member of the Odd Fellows and Masons among others.

Born in New York. Died suddenly in 1888. Member of the state board of education 1887-1881.
