Biographical Sketch:
He was the 4th of 10 children. Son of John R and Mary (De Camp) Hinchman. The family moved to New York city in 1825. His early work life included retail sales and office work. In 1836 he was offered a position in Detroit and he became a clerk for Chapin & Owen's drug and grocery store. In 1842, he became a partner in the business. In 1853 as sole owner, he redirected the business; in 1869 he formed the Merchants & Manufacturers Bank, with himself as president. He joined the Detroit Young Men's Society. He served his community in the fire dept. he was commissioner of sewers, 1855-60. He was a Whig then, after 1867, a Democrat.
