common school in Galt, Ontario, and then in Detroit, MI (public school then commercial academy)
Biographical Sketch:
Son of Francis & Mary (Surerus or Sturems) McElroy. Early education in Galt, Ont. He moved to Michigan in 1848 and lived in Detroit for 5 years. He worked as a clerk while attending night school. In 1853, he was sent to Ira, St. Clair Co., to manage a general store; he also taught in Ira. Had business interests in New Baltimore, Marine City & St. Clair. In al he spent 10 years each in St. Clair and Macomb Counties. Produced salt using his own system. Involved in highway and railroad development. He served as township supervisor, justice of the peace, school inspector and commissioer of highways. In addition, he was postmaster, village trustee and elected mayor of St.Clair. He was president and general manager of the Marine City Stove Co. and of St. Clair Spoke Works. He moved to Elyria, OH in about 1904 to live with his daughter, Grace. He attended a Congregationalist church but claimed no denomination.
Notable Facts:
Credited with the discovery of rock salt in east Michigan.
Created literary society "Society of Brothers" in 1858 and in 1867 in New Baltimore he founded "The Freeman's Club." Claims to have never used intoxicating liquors or tobacco.
