Son of Rufus and Rhoda K. (Dean) Read. He served as supervisor of Richland Township for several years; township clerk and school inspector. Instrumental in the funding of the insane asylum in Kalamazoo. In 1880, he acted as deputy U.S. marshal.

Notable Facts:
Died of a stroke/ apoplexy. Uncle of Rep. Edward G. Read [1919/20].
