Born in Masonville, NY, Dickerman moved to the midwest and attended Oberlin College in Ohio for a short time. He then taught school in Missouri and Ohio before enlisting in the 105th Ohio Volunteers in 1862. He rose to rank of adjutant and served in the army until the close of the Civil War. He graduated from the Union Law College in Cleveland in 1865 and opened his practice in Hillsdale, MI. Dickerman was Senator from the Ninth District in 1881-1882. He was also Circuit Court Commissioner for four years in the Michigan 14th Circuit, 1888-93. His positions included Justice of the Peace, Director of Public schools three years, and Probate Court Judge for four years.
