Served as U.S. Commissioner, Western District of Michigan (1957-62). A delegate to Constitutional Convention (1961-62). Member of Wiley-Koon Post, American Legion; Elks; Kalamazoo County, Michigan and American Bar Associations; chairman, board of directors, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Schoolcraft, Michigan chapter.

Delegate to the Michigan constitutional convention of 1961-1962. Minority floor leader & chairman of the Rep. state senate policy committee. Elected to 6 consecutive Congresses, 1967-1979.
