Biographical Sketch:
Son of John Porter and Maria Doris (Bently) Mitchell. He was sent to Urbana, OH to learn the tinsmith trade in 1843, becoming a journeyman in 1846. He went to California in 1849, mining and working at his trade in Coloma, CA until 1853. He then ventured into buying cattle and hogs and shipping them from Oregon to California gold fields. He returned to Ohio in 1853, operating a grist mill and manufacturing sash, blinds and furniture. He settled in East Bay, Grand Traverse Co., MI, in 1866, where he was in the lumber business. He was an army sutler during the Civil War. For several years, he was Register of the US Land Office in Reed City, 1878-87. He was village trustee in Lima, OH, 1847. He also served as justice of the peace [14 years], school inspector, member of the board of review and as township treasurer.
