Lewis gives birth date as 10/31/1830. Arrived in Marquette, MI, 1849. Held many local offices. 1855, went into the mercantile business & was admitted to the bar. 1862 organized the First National Bank of Marquette; had the leading insurance business there for 25 yrs. Register of the U.S. land office, 1857, moving the office from Sault Ste. Marie to Marquette

Notable Facts:
Donated Presque Isle to Marquette, to become a park. Moore says he was born in 1830 rather than 31 [vol. 1, p.468] Portrait available on p.[469]. His grandfather, Capt. Stephen White, raised the 1st American flag over Ft. Stanwix on 8/6/1877.
