Biographical Sketch:
Son of Friedrich and Hellena (Wens) Veenfliet. He fulfilled his 2 year military service in the Prussian army before entering the University of Bonn in 1835 where he studied mathematics, natural science and general philosophy. He taught at the high school in Aix-la-Chapelle and later, in Rheydt. Political turmoil in his homeland forced him to flee to Belgium before emigrating to the United States. He came to Michigan in December 1849. He settled in eastern Saginaw County in 1850, in Blumfield Township. Appointed Commissioner of Immigration, 1859-60, by Gov. Wisner. Elected register of deeds for Saginaw Co. in 1860 and county trearuer in 1870, serving 6 years in the latter post. He also served as postmaster.
