Biographical Sketch:
Son of William & Mary E. (Allbright) Gutman. Family emigrated to the US in August, 1830, working a series of farms in PA, OH (1838) & finally Allegan Co., MI in 1853. He helped his father on the farm until age 21 then learned the carpenter's trade. He worked as a carpenter for about 3 years. Lived in OH for a time until he had the resources to develop property in Salem, MI, 1852-55. Moved to Salem, 1855. Served in Co. D, 9th Reg. Michigan Veteran Volunteers Infantry. He served as justice of the peace, 4 years; commissioner of highways, 2 years and as supevisor (9 years)
