He came to Michigan in 1832, settling in Bruce, Macomb County. During 6 years of his early manhood he lived in Rochester,
Oakland County, and was engaged in mercantile business. He then, in 1850,
moved to Walker, Kent County, where he followed farming for about 22 years. After that time he was employed as an accountant and collection
agent.
