Son of Levi & Martha (Soule) Perham. Of English & Scottish descent. Spent his childhood in Jefferson Co., NY. Taught for several yrs in Iowa, Kansas, Illinois & New York before moving to Spring Lake, MI in 1860. He was principal there for several years and was on the local board of education for 17 yrs. Also did some surveying in Minnesota. Inspected lumber for a time; had a grocery business & later a general store. Held several local offices. A supporter of the temperance movement. Member of the Masons & Odd Fellows.
