Biographical Sketch:
Youngest son of Horace & Elizabeth Rose (Hart) Jerome who emigr. to Mich. from Trumansburg, NY, 1828. Spent youth near Syracuse, NY then, after 1834, in St. Clair Co., MI. He had jobs floating & hauling logs, clerking on ships & co. offices. Briefly had a shipping business c. 1850. Went to Calif. in 1853 to mine. Came to Saginaw, 1854, worked with his brother operating hardware estabs. & lumbering. Organized & acted as Colonel of the 23rd Reg., Michigan Infantry, 1862. Served as Governor Crapo's military aide from 1865 to 1866 and on the State Military Bd 8 yrs beginning in 1865. Served on the 1873 committee that amended the state constitution and on the US Bd. of Indian Comm. 1876-1881. Retired, 1883. In 1889, he was appointed and served on the Cherokee commission, which attained land from the Indians to form the Oklahoma Territory.
Notable Facts:
15th Gov. of Michigan & 1st native elected to hold the position. During his tenure, an immigration commissioner was named; the Travers City State Hospital for the Insane was founded; the state's railroad system was advanced; and the Michigan School for the Blind was established in Lansing.
