Biographical Sketch:
Of English parentage. Son of Ralph and Mary Eliza (Halstead) Ely. He came to Alma, Gratiot Co., MI, in April 1854. He entered the army as a private of company C, 8th Michigan infantry, enlisting at Arcadia, 2/25/1865, and commissioned 2nd lieutenant A4/25/1865. At the close of the war, he returned to Alma and engaged in farming. He served three terms as president of Alma village and was postmaster.
