Son of Benjamin and Emeline (Johnson or Pitts) Sanborn. He began service in the 22nd Michigan Inf. as a Major on Aug.8,1862.Promoted to Lieut. Col. on Jan.5,1863, he was wounded in action at Chickamauga, Ga. on Sept.20,1863.He was discharged for disability on June 7,1864. Bvt. Colonel March 13,1865 ,"for conspicuous gallantry at the battle of Chickamauga "Bvt. Brig. General U.S. Vols. ,March 13,1865,"for conspicuous gallantry and meritorious service during the war" A member of a lumbering family after the war, he was a member of the Michigan senate 1867-68 and a founder of the Port Huron & Northwestern Railway in 1878.The Port Huron GAR post was named in his honor
