Son of William And Nancy (Pullen) Young. Lived on family farm until 18, when he began working as a carriage maker. Moved to Romulus, MI in 1836 with his brother where they ran a carriage making and blacksmithing business. When that failed, they began farming. He served as township clerk, school inspector, supervisor, associate judge, justice of the peace. Michigan militia member until 1852 with rank of colonel.
Vice president of the Monroe and Wayne Mutual Fire Insurance Company.

Claims to have given the vote that changed the name of the capital from Michigan to Lansing.
