Of Irish and Scottish descent. Son of Benjamin J. & Catherine (Bard) Darragh. Moved to Claiborne Co., MS, & became a teacher; returned to Michigan upon the outbreak of the Civil War.Enlisted in Co. H, 18th Reg., Michigan Volunteer Infantry, 1862; promoted and served with Co. D, 9th Reg., Michigan Volunteer Cavalry, 1863; mustered out as a capt., 1865. Superintendent of the public schools of Jackson, 1867. Moved to St. Louis, Gratiot Co., MI, 1870 starting the first bank there; mayor of St. Louis, MI, 1893.
