Son of Hervey [or Harvey] and Angeline (Stevens) Dodge. Of English descent. Lewis gives birth yr as 1853. He spent time railroading and traveling. Operated a hotel in Eaton Rapids, MI from 1871-73. Began the study of law, 1876; admitted to the bar, 1878, in Eaton Co. Moved to Lansing, 1879. US commissioner for the eastern district of Michigan, 4 yrs; appointed chair of the State Bd of Arbitration & Conciliation by Gov. Ferris. Member of Co. E, 1st Regiment of Mich. state troops, 1886-89. Served on many local boards. Member of the Mason; Knights of Pythias; the Odd Fellows; Maccabees & Independent Order of Foresters.

Youngest member of the legislature during his term. Death certificate gives birth year as 1853. Full first name was Franklin.
