Biographical Sketch:
Of Welsh descent. Son of Obadiah Griffin. He resided for a time in Canada with his parents; after the War of 1812 came back to the US and settled in Griffinville, NY, where he and his brother Robert engaged in business and operated farms. The village, then named Griffin's Mill, was later called Griffinsville. He was a Colonel of Militia in New York. In the spring of 1832, he journeyed to Detroit by water, then traveled by team, and settled one mile east of Niles, MI. He entered 100 acres of land from the Government and immediately began the cullivation of the homestead. In 1838, he moved to Racine, WI, where he took up another 160 acres. Failed crops and family illness forced a return to their old locality in Michigan. He bought a farm in Ontwa Township, where he farmed until 1850, when he returned to Wisconsin, where he died. He was intimately associated with the development of Cass County. He served as supervisor, justice of the peace, and was placed upon the Bench as Associate Judge of the county. He was a Mason. George He served as county commissioner, 1838; associate judge, 1849; supervisor, 1844, 1850.
