Biographical Sketch:
Son of Elihu L. and Anna (McCabb) Hannah. Born on a farm known as 'Beech Woods' 12 miles from Erie, PA. Of Scottish descent. Emigrated to Michigan, 1828 at 4; returned to Erie for a time at about 16. Returned to Michigan in 1837 and went to Saint Clair County. Worked at a lumber yard in Port Huron; with partners [Hannah, Lay and Co.], built a sawmill in the Grand Traverse region in the early 1850s., taking up permanent residence in 1854. He was elected village president of Traverse City, MI 1885. He sold off his lumber interests in 1886 but still maintained other business interests in flour, steamboats etc..
