Of Irish decent. His farther, Frank Murphy, was a judge in Wyandotte for twenty-two years and was also in the insurance business. After working in the insurance business with his father for several years he went to Detroit and took a position with the Detroit Times. He then worked for the telephone company and the gas company before taking the position as salesman of barber's supplies.
