Biographical Sketch:
He arrived in Sault Ste. Marie, MI with his parents, John and Elizabeth (Lothian) Bayliss, in 1878. At the age of 8 he earned money turning a grindstone; at 14 he worked in a sawmill, then apprenticed as a harness maker under his father's direction. He later joined a government surveying party, surveying the course of rivers. He qualified as a tug pilot at 21. He served as a letter carrier in the Sault from 1900-04, when he became US inspector of train baggage passing between Canada and the US. Entered county politics in 1908 when he ran for Sheriff. President of the National Letter Carriers' Assoc., local chapter; Master of Bethel Lodge 358, F. and A.M. [Masons], member of the Knights of Pythias and Modern Woodsmen of America. . President of the Michigan Assoc. of Sheriffs, Chiefs of Police and Prosecuting Attorneys. He also served as president of the letter carriers association of Sault Ste. Marie.

Notable Facts:
Spent 20 months working and prospecting in the Yukon and Alaska, 1898-99. Died in Nov 1959, exact date not known
