Of English ancestry. Son of Thomas and Emma Ann (Chown) Downing. He worked for his father until the age of 21, when he began farming on his own. He served several years as president of the Wayne county farmers' institute, and as state deputy of the grange. He was a member of Michigan state board of agriculture, 1934-39. Member of the Masons
