Biographical Sketch:
Of english German descent. Son of Richard Vivian and Catherine (Ullrey) Hicks. In 1896 he was elected clerk of Milton township on the Democrat ticket and served 3 years, following this in 1901 by seven consecutive years as supervisor. In 1908, he was elected a superintendent of the poor for Cass county and filled that position until elected to the legislature.

Notable Facts:
Great grand nephew of Sir Hussy Vivian, who fought in the battle of Waterloo, and a great nephew of William Hicks, who was with Lord Nelson in the battle of Trafalgar. His maternal grandfather, Doctor Perry, was a member of the Royal Navy and accompanied Captain Cook on his first voyage around the world.
