Biographical Sketch:
He came to America in 1864 hoping to enlist in the Union army but was t00 young. In 1866 he began a newspaper career as a proofreader for the Detroit Tribune. By 1869 he was city editor for the Abend Post. About 1878 he moved to Cheboygan county and held several county posts. He had business and political interests in Cheboygan in the early 1890s and served as supervisor, postmaster and justice of the peace. He returned to Detroit and the Abend in the 1890's. He had timber holdings in Cheboygan and real estate in the Detroit area. Member and trustee of the Arbeiter Society.
Notable Facts:
Koehler township , Cheboygan county, was named for him.
With Herbert F. Baker, he started the first movement for primary nominations in the county.
Originated the first German Day celebration in Detroit; brought about the organization of the German - American bund , being a federation of Detroit German societies.
1913 Manual says he came from Germany in 1874. Per 1920 Census , he emigrated in 1864 and naturalized in 1872.
