Of English and Scotch descent. Son of Addison and Mahala Ann (Carter) Hulse. At the age of 19 began 2 years of work for O.W. Barker, blacksmith. Also worked as a farmer for 2 years. Later entered the the mercantile business. In 1873, he enlisted in Company A, eighth regular calvalry, for 5 years.
