Son of John H. and Lydia (Clyman) Yawkey. He was a pioneer lumberman in the Saginaw Valley. He moved to East Saginaw, MI in 1852; went to Chicago in 1858 and was in business with Thomas M. Avery. He returned to E. Saginaw in 1864. Mayor of East Saginaw in 1865. He had a lumber related company known as Samuel W. Yawkey & Company
