Biographical Sketch:
Son of Sylvester Newkirk. Located in Bay City, 1879. Served as circuit court commissioner, 1880-81. Employed as bookkeeper for Birkett Manufacturing Company, 1882-84. Located in Williamsburg, KY to found Williamsburg Times newspaper, 1884. Located in Lake County to publish Luther Enterprise, 1888. Appointed interim Lake County prosecutor, 1889. Elected to above office, 1890, serving until 1892. In 1893, he located at Dexter as cashier of the Dexter Savings Bank. He was Washtenaw County Probate Judge, 1897-1900; Mayor of Ann Arbor, 1931-33. Member, Freemasons; Knights Templar; the Elks; Shriners; Odd Fellows; Modern Woodmen. Newkirk Township, Lake County, is named for him.

Listed as H. Wirt Newkirk on the 1910 US Census; and Wirt H. Newkirk in 1900. His mother was the niece of President Millard Fillmore. Member of Michigan state house of representatives, 1893-94, 1907-10, 1917-18 (Osceola District 1893-94, Washtenaw County 1st District 1907-10, 1917-18).
