Son of Michael M. & Bridget Markham O'Brien. Came to the US in October, 1898. Worked for the Wabash Railroad. Joined the Detroit police department in 1905. After resigning from the police department, went into the wholesale & retail beer, wine & liquor business and was an agent for Blatz Brewing Co. Entered into real estate brokering business in 1919.

Father of Rep./Sen. Michael J. O'Brien and grandfather of Sen. Michael J. O'Brien, jr. Died in office in 1951.
