Biographical Sketch:
Son of Nathaniel & Sarah (Nevins) Ball. Grad. from Dartmouth, 1820; studied law & admitted to the bar 1824. After the death of his brother-in-law, he managed his sister's oil-cloth manufacturing business in Lansingburg, NY. Traveled extensively for a time. Settled in Grand Rapids, MI, 1837 & engaged in land speculation & practiced law. Lived in Europe in the early 1870s
Notable Facts:
Taught the first school in Oregon, 1832. Trustee of the School Board of Grand Rapids for over 20 years. Michigan Represented eastern capitalists in locating lands, Grand Rapids, MI., 1837. Representative from Kent and other counties, 1838. Senior member of the firm of Ball & McKee, 1852-1884. Appointed by Governor Barry to select Michigan land for improvements, 1842. Conservative Democrat.
