Biographical Sketch:
Son of Samuel and Anna Bement. He taught for a time before moving to Michigan at age 23, about 1835. There he made extensive surveys of land for the government and individuals. He also studied for the ministry at this time [ordained in 1840 in Clarendon, MI], preaching in Dexter, Jackson and Battle Creek. In the latter, he was elected justice of the peace and mayor. His post office was Dexter, MI in 1840. He relocated to Ohio, studied law and was admitted to the bar but did not practice. He then traveled extensively and became a lecturer in the subjects of chemistry, botany and ancient history. He was a Knight Templar and Mason.
