Biographical Sketch:
Enlisted as a pvt in Co. C, 43rd (or 34th?) Reg., NY Vol. Inf., 8/3/1861; discharged in 12/1862 due to a wound (5/1/1862 at Lees Mills, VA) which caused the amputation of his right arm. Alderman, 5th Ward, Ann Arbor, elected 4/1875. Admitted to the bar in Ann Arbor, 5/1875 and began practicing at Ludington soon after. County Prosecutor, Mason Co., 1877-80, 1885-86. Moved to Hollister, CA, 1910 to engage in fruit growing.
Notable Facts:
Served under the Congressional Sergeant-at-Arms, appointed 1/2/1872. Elected to the 54th-59th Congresses 1895-1907; served as a member of the Michigan constitutional convention in 1907; member of the Spanish Treaty Claims Commission, 12/1907. Chapman (Le) gives birth date as 1/7/1843.
