Son of Stephen and Martha (Fairchild) O'Dell. At the age of 18 he began teaching school and continued for 6 years, after which he engaged in farming and stock raising. For several years was a director of the Allegan and Ottawa Insurance Co. He served 10 years as a school officer and 10 years as supervisor of his township, at one time chairman of the board.
