Biographical Sketch:
Son of George Clark. At age 15, he became a clerk [from 1812-18] before becoming a merchant. He opened a store in Detroit in 1830. In 1832 he purchased land on the St. Clair River and moved to Port Huron; and operated a steam mill on Black River. In 1835, he moved to China, MI. In China, he built a dock and store where he traded and bought furs etc. He was captain of the steamship 'General Gratiot' for 2 seasons. He served as a commissioner to settle Native American claims in Michigan. Member of the Masons.
Notable Facts:
Ill health caused him to travel to Europe; upon the return trip he was shipwrecked.
He was a Democrat until 1856 when he became a Republican.
